True Romance is an old favorite, and yes the Oldman role kills, but falling in love hookers is bad practice.

Have you seen The Night Porter (1974) directed by Liliana Cavani, with Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling, A bit offbeat but I think it is right up your alley.

Not movies, but two good depictions

come to mind:

- Dog of the South, by Charles Portis. (More funny than dark)

- Nebraska. Title track from the album of the same name by Springsteen (about as dark as it gets on the theme)
